Potato

The potato (Solanum tuberosum) is a multi-purpose vegetable. Regardless of preference fried, mashed, baked or grilled you will find some interesting facts about the popular potato:

  • Potatoes were firstly consumed 6,000 years ago by the natives who lived in the Andes Mountains in Peru
  • The Incas were the first who measured time based on the time required for cooking potatoes
  • In Peru you can find more than 3,800 varieties of potato. They differ in size, shape, color and texture, but  they all have a place in Peruvian cuisine
  • The religious leaders preached against the potato because it was not mentioned in the Bible
  • The potatoes grown in more than 125 countries
  • China is the largest producer of potatoes in the world
  • The only potato museum in the world is  located in Washington, USA, and includes over 2,000 items of potato
  • The first  french fries were served in the United States by Thomas Jefferson at the presidential dinner.

The potatoes still continue to write history. In October of 1995, the potato was the first vegetable that could be grown in space! NASA has invited scientists to contribute to the development of super-foods to feed astronauts on long space journeys. Even today, they hope that the beloved potato of the Incas of Peru  will be able to nourish the future space colonies.
