7 – 10 July, Leonidio

Next time, next year!

They call her “Greek with an African voice”, and from the colour of that voice it is clear that Sugahspank is not a simple, ordinary musician. She was born and raised in Piraeus. She sings from the age of 14 and in 2008 she agitated the Greek music scene with an album that seems to have come from abroad. Her song «The Incredible, The Invisible» earned rave reviews in Greece and around the world and was voted No. 1 album of the year by many musical forms and sites. The soul, swing, funk and gospel sounds seem to be exactly what was missing from the Greek music scene.
Georgia Kalafatis, is her real name and as she has stated in an interview

“it is a reference to Sugah Galore, my band, and I like it because it has sound, sssspaaaank!”

Let’s meet her better through her official site

In 2004 she finished her studies in the media. Then she formed the Sugah Galore, the band that revealed her as the musician, and through numerous live and festival groups rocked the boat of the Greek underground scene. In 2006 Sugahspank met Blend aka Mishkin, initially to participate in the album Misplaced but the cooperation has progressed much further, since few months later and together with Dj Palov and BnC they formed independent record company Cast-a-Blast. The label soon acquired very good reputation because of thoughtful releases in reggae, hip hop & down-tempo rhythms and soon came the worldwide distribution by M Connexion. In September 2008 the Sugahspank released her debut solo album “The incredible, the invisible” together with Vlend aka Mishkin and Cast-a-Blast. The album gets incredible reviews, not only in Greece but also abroad. Indeed in many musical forms and sites it was No1 album of 2008. Georgia continues to play with Sugah Galore, who released their debut record “Spacecakes” at the end of 2008.
Simultaneously she preformed gigs with the Cast-a-Blast Sound system, the human beat-boxers ‘Word Of Mouth” and with gypsy swing quartet “The Swing Shoes”. In 2009 the UK Vodaphone and Vice magazine choose her for the documentary series “360 Heroes”, edited by Spike Jones (adaptation of Being John Malcovitch). In May 2013 she released the new album with M. Vamvakari with and Alex Retsis.
