Chateaus of Prastos

Prastos was the historic capital city of Tsakonia, from the Middle Ages up to the pre-revolutionary times. The end comes in 1826, with the holocaust of Ibrahim.

Today’s ruins are examples of local austere architecture: arched doorway, narrow windows, decorative box, built-in staircase with tall arch roofs with slate slabs, in bold defense construction. The three districts of the village, were decorated with towers, churches, aqueducts, magnificent mansions and chateaus: the Sarantaris mansion (the best preserved building with inscription “1722”), the Kalimeris chateau, the Karamanou mansion (1788) and Gounelos chateau, built in the second Turkish occupation.
