In America in 1869, 100 years before the Moon landing of Apollo 11, the warlike people cry their fate because the war ended and all of them have fallen into inaction. They reminisce the glorious past and feel uncomfortable with mourning clothes, which get old unused in closets and with the cotton that grow back in the fields, as characteristically Verne writes.

Just then, the president of the Assosiation of cannons, the wise Impef Barbican, comes to give the solution by announcing a plan of dropping a bomb from the Earth to the Moon, an action which will constitute the first substantial communication between the human and the Moon and glorify all the 36 United States of America on the world’s end.

A bitter enemy of the president, and a strange French who will demand and eventually managed to get into the bomb and go to the moon, are a few elements that make the action moving and hilarious at the same time.
